First Aid Requirements for Childcare and Education Staff in Queensland

If you work in childcare, family day care, or a school setting in Queensland, "any first aid certificate" usually isn’t enough. Regulators are specific about which unit staff need — and there’s a good reason HLTAID012 exists as its own course rather than just being a variation on the standard one.

Why education and care gets its own certificate

Children aren’t small adults. Airway obstruction, asthma, and anaphylaxis present and progress differently in infants and young children than in adults, and the emergencies educators actually encounter skew heavily toward these. HLTAID012 — Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting — builds the course around that reality instead of treating it as a footnote.

What it covers beyond standard first aid

  • CPR technique scaled for infants and children, not just adults
  • Asthma management, including recognising an attack early and using a reliever correctly
  • Anaphylaxis response, including adrenaline autoinjector use — critical given how often allergies show up in a classroom or childcare room full of kids whose triggers may not be known to staff yet
  • The same core first aid skills as HLTAID011 — bleeding, fractures, shock, bites and stings — applied with a child-specific lens

Meeting the requirement without losing a full day

The course runs 4 to 6.5 hours face-to-face at Cairns RSL, GST-exempt at $150, and leads to a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment valid for three years. CPR sits inside that three-year cycle but still needs annual renewal, same as the standard course.

Who typically needs this

  • Early childhood educators and family day care providers
  • School staff, particularly those supervising younger students
  • Anyone whose regulator or employer specifically names HLTAID012 rather than HLTAID011

If you’re not sure which certificate your workplace or licensing body actually requires, it’s worth checking before booking — the two courses aren’t interchangeable for compliance purposes even though they share a lot of content.
